Cubes and class in Marrakech

- Paula Hardy

The perfect antidote to the frenetic pace of Marrakech’s medina is this tranquil resort and country club set in a vast expanse of countryside framed by a ring of mauve mountains. Swim in its lake-like pool or tee-off beneath cornflower blue skies on its 18-hole golf course and vow never to go home.

Beautifully situated in a vast estate in Tameslouht, eight miles from Marrakech. The site includes an 18-hole golf course designed by Cabell B Robinson, a renowned American fairway designer. Regular free shuttles drive to the medina 20 minutes away.

A series of interlinked cubes, the Fairmont’s earthy, apricot-coloured hub echoes the ksars (fortified villages) of the south. Sensitive to the desert climate, the gorgeous interiors by designer Marilin Spataro make a sophisticated play on light and shade. Huge picture windows reveal stepped pools, out of which rise towering palms, giving the impression of standing at the edge of an oasis.

Light filters through moucharabieh screens and archways frame garden views while allowing air to circulate in the high halls, and fabulously decorated bars and restaurants stretch either side of the entrance. Excellent. The lake-like pool wraps around the front of the property close to the bar and three restaurants, but set down a level to provide privacy to bathers. A sports centre includes four tennis courts and two squash courts; there is an expansive spa; and the 72-par golf course offers full country club facilities. Private coaching and tailored programmes are offered and an army of 400 well-trained staff strives to keep guests happy.

The 124 rooms and suites have dreamy Atlas mountains views, private garden terraces or balconies accessed by floor-to-ceiling sliding doors. The smallest Deluxe rooms are whopping and include an elegant living room, a light-filled bedroom, an enormous marbled bathroom and dressing room. Like the public spaces, the décor employs Moroccan crafts in a contemporary scheme that layers interesting textures and artisanal craftsmanship. In addition, there are 10 fabulous two-bedroom villas with their own private gardens, pool and barbecue terrace. You’ll need days to sample all the dishes, from the home-baked harcha bread to the sweet cakes, cured meats and savoury counter crowded with salads and smoked salmon.

At lunch, everyone decamps to L’Olivier, the al fresco poolside

Fantastically family-friendly with a delightful children’s club (free for three to 12-yearolds). It has a dedicated outdoor play area and two mini tennis courts. Children can also visit the resort’s farm, while those aged 14 and over can use the sports centre. There are eight two-bedroom family suites.
