JUMEX MUSEUM, MEXICO CITY

Not every new museum looks like a train wreck. Chipperfield’s first project in Mexico offers a generous and welcoming series of calm public spaces in a crowded and sometimes daunting city that has its own share of modern landmarks, notably by the great Mexican modernist, Luis Barragán. The sawtooth roof of the museum is a tribute to the studio that the painter Diego Rivera shared in the city with his lover, Frida Kahlo.

HEYDAR ALIYEV CENTRE, BAKU AZERBAIJAN

Parisian-style boulevards and handsome sea front make Baku, the capital of oil-rich Azerbaijan, a much more likely tourist destination than most cities in former Soviet republics. The huge Aliyev cultural centre, named after the country’s formidable and authoritarian post-Soviet president, was one of the last major projects Dame Zaha Hadid completed before her death in 2016 at the age of just 65. It swoops up out of a grey suburb in soaring white curves, while the interior mixes a timber-lined concert hall with art spaces and a collection of presidential limousines that helps explain criticism of the project.
