LAB ARCHITECTURE STUDIO
Melbourne’s city centre was once cut off from the Yarra river by the railway tracks running into Flinders Street station. In a major piece of urban surgery, a stretch of line was covered over to become home to a set of public spaces framed by the National Gallery of Victoria and a museum of film as well as shops and pubs.
The complex was designed by LAB Architecture Studio, which won an international competition for the chance to lead the project.

MUSEUM OF ART, ARCHITECTURE AND TECHNOLOGY, LISBON

PEREZ MUSEUM, MIAMI
gold-plated Damien Hirst skeleton of a mammoth in a glass box. With its outdoor boardwalks, Herzog & de Meuron’s Perez Museum is a less frantic but impressive response to the climate and the context

MUSEUM OF ISLAMIC ART
internationally famous museums to set up local offshoots, Qatar acquired its own, very impressive, collection of Islamic art and commissioned the veteran Chinese-American architect I M Pei, celebrated for the pyramid at the Louvre and the National Gallery in Washington, to design a suitable home in Doha. Standing out from a skyline dominated by ostentatious high-rise towers, Pei’s dazzling white structure is sited on the seafront as a dominant but restrained landmark.
