THE SAVVY TRAVELLER
…for cricket in the Caribbean
Inspired by Simon Hughes’s story about cricket in Antigua (left) the final Test takes place in St Lucia from Feb 9 to 13, so there is just time to shoot out for a week of winter sunshine on the boundary and on the beach. Or head to Barbados later in the month for the two One Day Internationals (Feb 20-22). Caribtours (020 7751 0660; caribtours.co.uk) can arrange packages.
…for the carnival in Nice
A late Easter pushes Shrove Tuesday back to March 5 this year, but France’s liveliest carnival – which ought to be held during Lent – is happening before that, from Feb 16 to March 2. Highlights are the Carnival Parades, Parades of Lights and Flower Parades. This year’s theme is French cinema. You can also catch the first of the spring sunshine on the Riviera. EasyJet (easyjet.com) and BA (ba.com) fly to Nice. See our guide: telegraph.co.uk/tt-nice.
…for skiing in Switzerland
Some Swiss resorts are enjoying near record snow depths. The Graubünden region is a case in point and has the advantage that you can fly via Zurich rather than busy Geneva. St Moritz is the most famous, but consider also Flims and the linked resorts Arosa and Lenzerheide. Powder Byrne (powderbyrne.com).
…for Rembrandt in Amsterdam Amsterdam was home to Rembrandt – and from Feb 15 the Rijksmuseum (rijksmuseum.nl) marks the 350th anniversary of his death with an exhibition of all 22 of his paintings in its collection, as well as 60 drawings and more than 300 prints. Combine a visit with a trip to the Rembrandt house (rembrandthuis.nl). Eurostar (eurostar.com) offers a direct train. Our guide to Amsterdam is at telegraph.co.uk/tt-amsterdamguide.
