THE CRAIC’S GREAT IN JANUARY
A visit to Dublin at the start of January (“Highlights of the low season”, Feb 16) is a queue-free treat. Wrap up warm against the sea winds and head for the bibliophile’s delights of the Old Library Long Room at Trinity College and the glorious Book of Kells. Be astounded by the delicate beauty of the gold boat of the Broighter Hoard at the National Museum before settling in at the Long Hall, where a nod to the barman will keep your glass filled.
Walk out to the museum at Kilmainham Gaol for stories about Ireland’s path to independence, before stopping at the Guinness Storehouse for its excellent multimedia experience and rooftop views across the city. And, of course, there are the bars and live music in Temple Bar to follow. Great craic.
STEPHEN STEWART WINS A £250 RAILBOOKERS VOUCHER wartime history. British forces surrendered to the Japanese in 1942 at the Old Ford Factory. Changi Museum, dedicated to Singapore life during the Japanese occupation, is close to the airport and easily accessible by the efficient MRT system. Be refreshed at one of the less touristy hawker centres, at Newton near Orchard Road; enjoy a Tiger beer and a plate of duck and rice for under £10 – a snip here. Self-guided walking tours of the colonial district provide many buildings to gaze at, including the magnificent St Andrew’s Cathedral. CAROL GARDNER
