RIDES AND RANCHES IN THE WILD WEST

- Kathy Arnold

Pull on a 10-gallon hat, swing into the saddle and ride out into the “Big Country” to get a sense of its vast open landscapes and feeling of space. Add in mountains, log cabins, campfires, star-spangled skies and rodeos and you have a true experience of the American West.

WHY IT’S SPECIAL

Celebrated in books and films, cowboys loom large in the American story. A century ago, the city folk, who headed west for a taste of the romantic cowboy life were nicknamed “dudes” and the ranches where they stayed became known as dude ranches.

That tradition continues but the question nowadays is: what kind of ranch should I choose? There are several types, with the most authentic offering daily rides and homey comforts in wooden cabins.

Experienced horsemen and women can enjoy learning how to drive cattle, lasso calves and brand steers on a “working ranch”. Great for families and all riding abilities are the classic “dude ranches”. As well as getting you out on the trail, many also offer fishing, hiking, square dancing, cookouts and a trip to the local rodeo.

Then there are “resort ranches”, where riding is but one of many activities. Others might include tennis, outings in four-wheel-drive vehicles and spa treatments.

YOU’LL NEVER FORGET…

Reconnecting with nature: grand views of unspoilt mountains; the cleanest air; velvet black skies, with sparkling stars that seem near enough to touch; reconnecting with family and friends. And little or no mobile phone coverage!

INSIDER TIP

Try everything that’s on offer: have a go at fly fishing or river rafting; play horseshoes and toast marshmallows around a campfire.
