Masks a must to stop DIY’s deadly dust

- Journal of Nanoparticle Research.

DIY enthusiasts and builders should wear masks while they work so they do not inhale dangerous dust emissions, according to new research.

Scientists found potentially harmful ultrafine particles reach up to 4,000 times normal background levels during activities such as drilling.

Breathing in the particles has been linked with serious cardiovascular and respiratory system-related diseases.

Leading the study, Dr Prashant Kumar, of the University of Surrey, said: “With the potential to breathe in harmful dust particles including silicon, copper and aluminium, our research shows that we need more regulatory guidelines, not only to protect construction workers, but also to protect the general public.

“In the meantime, construction workers and those undertaking their own building projects, should always err on the side of caution and wear face masks when undertaking activities that could throw out dust.”
