Spain heads for fresh elections after stalemate

-

Spanish voters were headed for fresh elections last night as the king declared there was no candidate for prime minister after months of talks on the formation of a coalition government failed.

King Felipe VI set in motion a constitutional procedure to dissolve parliament and call for a new ballot.

Parliamentary speaker Patxi Lopez said the date would be announced on May 3, but pundits pointed to June 26 as the most likely day.
