The Beyhive

- Charlotte Lytton

What is the Beyhive?

A collective term for Beyoncé’s fans.

What’s got them all abuzz?

Since the singer released her album Lemonade last week, speculation has been rife that some songs about infidelity are alluding to Jay Z, her husband. “You come home at 3am and lie to me,” Beyoncé sings.

Yikes.

Yikes, indeed – particularly as the line “Becky with the good hair” has sent the Beyhive into overdrive, questioning who this “other woman” might be.

And what have they surmised?

They first thought it was fashion designer Rachel Roy (ex-wife of Damon Dash, Jay Z’s old business partner) who posted a photo on the night of the album’s release captioned “Good hair, don’t care.” Then they moved on to Rita Ora who, in the middle of the rumours, wore the exact Gucci outfit that Beyoncé wore in one of her music videos.

Give me strength

Well, you may think we should be talking about more important matters of the day, but the Beyhive’s sting has been out in full force, sending Roy and her daughter offensive messages and vandalising her Wikipedia page, leading her to cancel an event due to a “personal emergency”.

So is this a conceptual divorce announcement?

It would appear not – the album may lead with tracks such as Denial, Anger and Emptiness, but it concludes with Forgiveness, Hope and Redemption.

In other words, Fleetwood Mac for the Instagram generation, then?

Totally.
