US flooding is ‘major disaster’

The death toll from flooding in the US state of West Virginia rose to 24, as President Barack Obama declared a major disaster.

The White House released federal aid for the hardest-hit areas after days of storms and heavy rain caused massive flooding.

High waters have washed away cars, trapped hundreds and left thousands without power. Hundreds of homes have been severely damaged or destroyed.
