Lord Hill quits Commission with £250,000 and standing ovation
A CONSERVATIVE peer who resigned as an EU commissioner following the vote to leave the European Union could receive a pay-off worth £250,000.
Lord Hill said he was doing the “right thing” by standing down after cam- paigning unsuccessfully during the referendum for Britain to stay in the EU.
But despite resigning from his £200,000-a-year role voluntarily, he is in line for a generous severance package.
MEPs took the rare step of giving the peer a standing ovation when he made his last appearance at the Euro- pean Parliament yesterday. As Lord Hill fought back tears during the emergency session, Parliament President Martin Schulz said: “You were involved in the campaign for the UK to Remain in the EU and on behalf of the European Parliament and for the work you have done I would like to express our thanks to you.”
