Brexit boost for women drivers

- By Marion Dakers

WOMEN drivers could get better deals on their car insurance after Brexit, as insurers are hoping to scrap EU rules on gender-neutral prices.

In 2012, the EU banned insurers from basing prices on whether the customer was male or female, undermining the appeal of brands such as Sheilas’ Wheels. Some firms have complained that they are forced to offer unfair prices to some drivers, such as young women, who inevitably shoulder the cost of higher claims from younger men, despite the fact that they tend to be safer on the roads.

“It’s not a terribly difficult thing to legislate for as we can revert back to the his- toric position,” said Geoffrey Maddock, a partner who specialises in insurance at Herbert Smith Freehills.

However, the AA has said it doubts the rules will be overturned “given that the industry has now adapted well to the new ruling and there would be a significant cost to insurers to do so”. Business: Page 1
