Drowning in sound

-

SIR – Bryan Goodrich (Letters, August 27), who was repelled by loud music at a cricket match at the Ageas Bowl in Hampshire, is not alone in having his sporting enjoyment spoiled.

The management of Huddersfield Leisure Centre is under the bizarre illusion that the enjoyment of midmorning swimmers (mostly pensioners) is increased by the inane, largely indistinct, ramblings of local radio, played at volume.

When did the idea take hold that every human activity – shopping, travelling, eating, drinking – has to be accompanied by piped music? And, how can it be stopped ? Stephen O’Loughlin Huddersfield, West Yorkshire
