SIR – I hope that we can now stop referring to the Prime Minister’s “kitten heels”. When I worked in the shoe-manufactur­ing industry, this type of heel unit was known as the rather less sexy “lavatory pan”.

The said heel unit was fixed to the bottom of the shoe after the lasting operations. If it required further shaping, this was done with a naumkeag scourer attached to the breasting machine. Richard Toyn Threshfiel­d, North Yorkshire
