Diet prosecco all round!

-

A NEW brand of diet prosecco which contains half the amount of sugar as regular fizz could be available in the country’s biggest supermarkets next spring.

Skinny Prosecco – which is currently only sold in Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and other high-end stores – is in talks with some of Britain’s biggest supermarkets.

It contains around 7g of sugar per litre, around half that of regular prosecco, which contains between 1215g per litre.

Champagne typically contains 12 to 32g per litre.

The diet fizz, which retails at £17.99 a bottle, has been in high demand from middleclass drinkers concerned about their sugar intake.

After launching in April Skinny Prosecco became the best-selling wine on Selfridges’ website. The company was forced to set up a waiting list, as demand outstripped its stock.

Skinny Prosecco, which is the first “diet” sparkling wine launched in the UK, has also caught the attention of celebrities including Ellie Goulding. She posted on her Instagram: “I’ll take them.”

Thomson & Scott, which produces the drink, does not add a high level of processed sugar at the end of the manufacturing process for a sweeter flavour, as is the case with most other sparkling wine.

The fizz’s founder, Amanda Thomson, who was raised on a no-sugar diet, said: “We laughed when we were called the ‘basic bitch drink of the summer’ but demand has been off the scale.”
