Hot duvets, dim lights and other hotel horrors

-

SIR – Jack Hay (Letters, October 1) lists his pet hates in small hotels and B&Bs.

I have two: the duvets, which are always too hot and an all-or-nothing situation; and inadequate bedside lights, invariably very dim and with no means of adjustment. Karin Proudfoot Fawkham, Kent SIR – Mr Hay hates squeaky bathroom doors in hotels. He should do as I do, and always pack a small can of WD-40. Michael Robinson Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire SIR – Trying to find the bed beneath a welter of cushions, then trying to find somewhere to stack said cushions. Jo-Ann Rogers Alsager, Cheshire SIR – There are never two comfortable chairs in a double room. One person always ends up sitting on the bed.

Recently, at an expensive hotel in Barcelona, we were met with one wooden chair. I asked if this could be remedied, as we both like to read on holiday. We ended up with two wooden chairs. Geraldine Blake Worthing, West Sussex SIR – We booked a B&B in Galway and reserved a room with a bath. When we arrived, cold and wet after a day’s walking, I fancied a soak. However, there was no plug. I nipped downstairs to ask the owner if I could have one.

“What’s the problem?” she asked. “You’ve got a bath.” When I explained that it was useless without a plug she harrumphed: “None of the other rooms has a bath or a plug.”

We left the next morning. Kate Graeme-Cook Blandford, Dorset
