Trump cuts foreign aid to boost military

Donald Trump has ordered a $54 billion defence spending spree by cutting the foreign aid budget and making savings at most domestic agencies. Mr Trump made rebuilding the armed forces a central part of his campaign. On the stump, he called for 90,000 more soldiers, 100 more air force jets and a 350-ship navy. The President’s budget plans could set up a showdown with Democratic opponents in Congress and the possibility of a government shutdown. Page 16
