Last-minute minting

SIR – I was surprised to receive two brand new £1 coins in my change the other day.

It made me wonder whether the Royal Mint was ridding itself of an overproduction before the introduction of the new design – or whether the same thought had entered the minds of fraudsters who were flooding the market with fakes before consigning their production equipment to the scrapheap.
