Lorry driver was on mobile as he killed woman in car

- By Sophie Jamieson

A POLISH lorry driver used his phone to change his music moments before he killed a 21-year-old woman by ploughing into her broken-down car.

Dariusz Tokarczyk was jailed for four-and-a-half years yesterday for killing “clever and artistic” Jodie Moss.

Her Vauxhall Corsa had suffered “catastrophic engine failure” which caused it to drift to a stop in the lefthand lane, as there was no hard shoulder for her to pull into.

Dash cam footage from Tokarczyk’s lorry played at Reading Crown Court showed him using his phone as he approached the point where Miss Moss’s car had broken down. He ploughed into the back of her car at 54mph.

The crash took place on the A34, the same road where lorry driver Tomasz Kroker killed a mother and three children last year. Kroker had also been scrolling through music on his phone at the time of the crash.

Outside court, Miss Moss’s father Jerry said: “The sentence for a loss of life will never be enough. Using any device, eating, or drinking I feel should be an instant ban. The new laws don’t go far enough to stop people using their phones at the wheel.”

Analysis showed Tokarczyk only braked as the collision took place and moved to the right to try to avoid the car 0.4 seconds before impact.

Tokarczyk, 47, admitted one count of causing death by dangerous driving.

In an impact statement, Mr Moss, said: “Life will never be the same for any of us. We have lost a very talented, beautiful, and kind-hearted person. Our home is now empty after 21 years.”

Her brother, Jorge, said: “She was amazingly clever and artistic. I love my sister forever and I won’t forget her.”
