New trend for shoes that don’t match is rather odd

- By Katie Morley and Caroline Leaper

IT MIGHT sound unbelievable but wearing odd shoes has become a hot trend, prompting the UK’s biggest online retailer to start selling “mix and match” packs of sandals.

The bizarre fashion statement was born at Paris Fashion Week last month, after high-end brand Celine sent models down the runway with mis-matching leather boots – one brown and the other in yellow.

Fashionistas and celebrities were quick to follow, with the likes of Brooklyn Beckham sporting one black and one white trainer, and Naomi Harris wearing odd yellow shoes at the Oscars.

Even White House press secretary Sean Spicer was spotted wearing one black and one brown brogue last week. It remains unclear whether he made a conscious effort to follow the trend, or if he simply did not realise he was wearing the wrong shoes.

Now the UK’s biggest online fashion retailer, ASOS, has cottoned on to the trend and has taken it to the mass market. It has started selling twin packs of “mix and match” women’s sandals in two different colours.

Its “Feisty Slider” sandals come in a twin pack with one pair in black and white, and one gold and black pair. The idea is that people can then choose between wearing two shoes of the same colour, or one of each.

Erica Davies, a fashion editor and founder of style blog The Edited, has been trialling the trend since summer. She said: “I think fashion should be fun, but I also don’t want to look ridiculous. I love the fact that my mismatched sandals are all in the same colourway. I love wearing them with simple black or white, to make them the focus.”
