SIR – Terry Loudwell’s uncle (Letters, April 26) would doff his hat in deference to the recorded lady whenever he rang the speaking clock.

In Army training I was told to stand to attention when addressing an officer over the telephone and to say “I am saluting you, Sir” when signing off – and to do so. Frank Smith Poole, Dorset
