Law in disrepute

-

SIR – The law wins respect when the punishments fit the crime. Draconian new speeding penalties (report, April 25) do anything but, as even minor infringements incur the loss of a week’s wage.

It is possible to be fractionally over a limit simply because a sign was missed, where it would be perfectly safe to have driven considerably faster. If, in such circumstances, you receive a greater punishment than you would for many deliberate crimes, the law will be seen as unjust – and rightly so.
