Hillary Clinton returns to public life as face of ‘protest’ group

- By Harriet Alexander in New York

HILLARY CLINTON has returned to the political fray, announcing the launch of a group designed to promote the work of organisations challenging President Donald Trump’s policies.

Called Onward Together, and with the motto: “resist, insist, persist, enlist,” the group is to throw its support behind a series of smaller organisations working to get more people involved in politics and support criminal justice reform.

“More than ever, I believe citizen engagement is vital to our democracy,” said Mrs Clinton, announcing the new group on Twitter.

“I’m so inspired by everyone stepping up to organise and lead.”

She did not say what form the assistance would take, but described it as a vehicle to encourage people to “get involved, organise, and even run for office”. The presidential challenger has been keeping a relatively low profile since her election defeat in November. She spent the first few months at home in upstate New York – frequently spotted walking in the woods – and has since said she was spending time with friends and family, particularly her grandchildren. Last month she gave her first interview since the election, speaking on stage in New York and discussing the sting of losing as well as her concerns about the direction the Trump administration was taking.

“This year hasn’t been what I envisioned, but I know what I’m still fighting for: a kinder, big-hearted, inclusive America. Onward!” she tweeted on Monday.

According to a mission statement posted on its website, Onward Together aims to “advance progressive values” by encouraging political engagement.

“In recent months, we’ve seen what’s possible when people come together to resist bullying, hate, falsehoods, and divisiveness, and stand up for a fairer, more inclusive America,” said Mrs Clinton, in an email to her supporters.

“From the Women’s March to airports where communities are welcoming immigrants and refugees to town hall meetings in every community, Americans are speaking up and speaking out like never before.”

Mrs Clinton named three groups they would support – Swing Left, Color of Change, and Emerge America, and tweeted, “stay tuned for more to come”.
