Venezuela as the model for Corbynism
SIR – As the rioting and death toll escalate in Venezuela (owing to the collapse of the economy in this oil-rich nation), let us not forget that the cause is the socialist programme begun by Hugo Chávez and continued under Nicolás Maduro.
Let us not forget, either, that Jeremy Corbyn has been vocal in his praise for the Chávez-maduro revolution and, given the opportunity, would implement a similar programme in Britain. Michael R Gordon

SIR – Labour’s manifesto is predicated on raising substantial extra taxes from corporations and higher earners. That a Labour government will benefit from an economic performance in line with OBR forecasts needs to be challenged.
The situation would be very different. Brexit negotiations would become even more uncertain. Price inflation would then rapidly become the dominant issue for the Bank of England, which would have no option but to raise interest rates.
The lack of headroom, without triggering a private-sector debt crisis, would then become a further scare.
