Pam Am jumbo jet crashes into the town of Lockerbie, right, killing all 259 on board and 11 people on the ground. Libyan Abdelbaset al-megrahi was convicted of bombing the flight in 2001.

Police find a large quantity of bomb-making material at a Birmingham rented property. Moinul Abedin, arrested and jailed for 20 years, is believed to be the UK’S first al-qaeda-inspired terrorist.

Four suicide bombers kill 52 people and injure hundreds more in an attack on London public transport.

Arrests made after a mostly British-born al-qaeda cell plot to detonate liquid bombs disguised as drinks on flights to the US and Canada. A ban on containers in plane cabins is still in place.

Two men inspired by Islamic extremism ram a car laden with petrol and propane tanks into the main terminal of Glasgow airport. Five people are injured.

Muslim convert carries out a failed suicide bomb attack on a restaurant in Exeter with a home-made nail bomb. Only the attacker was injured.

Four men are arrested after being overheard by the security services plotting to attach a bomb to a remote-controlled car and drive it into a Territorial Army base in Luton.

Six men plot to bomb an English Defence League rally in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, but arrive too late to carry out their attack. One was under partial counter-terrorism surveillance. All pleaded guilty.

Fusilier Lee Rigby, right, is murdered by Islamic extremists as he walks near his barracks in south-east London. His killers, Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale, were jailed for life.
