The immovable soloist in the red waistcoat
sir – I (and many of my friends) can vouch for Jane Shilling’s observations (Comment, May 22) on the territorial determination of the robin.
Winchester Cathedral is home to a well-established pair, and on Saturday the cock bird joined the combined forces of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Royal Choral Society midway through our afternoon rehearsal, chirping heartily over us from a perch on the choir screen.
The robin was still there, undaunted and unbowed, at the end of our concert, having added a special touch that neither Rachmaninov nor Prokofiev could have dreamed of.
