Operation Petticoat (1959) FILM4, 1.45PM ★★★

 A beguiling Second World War comedy starring Cary Grant as Lieutenant Commander Matt Sherman, a submarine captain with a strict sense of order, and a rulebreaking hustler of a first officer (Tony Curtis). The vessel is bombed by the Japanese, but that’s the least of its worries. Five nurses in distress, a goat and a coating of pink paint all pose challenges for the effortlessly funny crew. Dina Merrill also stars.

Runaway Jury (2003) FILM4, 6.20PM ★★★

 Rachel Weisz is the widow of a man shot in cold blood who attempts to sue a gun manufacturer with the help of her idealistic lawyer (a brilliant Dustin Hoffman). But she soon finds that there are those who will stop at nothing to bend justice for their own purposes. It lacks the momentum of the John Grisham thriller on which it is based, but remains an entertaining drama. Gene Hackman and John Cusack are among the excellent supporting cast.

Ray (2004) SONY MUSIC CHANNEL, 11.15PM ★★★★

 Jamie Foxx hits all the right notes in his portrayal of soul musician Ray Charles. The singer witnessed his brother’s death and went blind aged seven. These events shaped the man. But the road to stardom was littered with drugs, racism and failed relationships – none of which hindered him becoming one of the most inimitable performers. Kerry Washington, Regina King and Terrence Howard also star.
