India’s longest bridge is opened by Modi

-

India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, marked three years in power yesterday by inaugurating its longest bridge.

The 5.7 mile Dhola-sadiya bridge, which spans the vast Brahmaputra River in the north-eastern state of Assam, can carry a 60-ton tank and will cut travel times from Assam to the frontier state of Arunachal Pradesh, which is partly claimed by China.

Mr Modi, who led his Bharatiya Janata Party to victory in 2014, said the bridge would open “the door for economic development on a big scale”.
