Sudan soldiers on trial for rape of aid workers
Thirteen soldiers accused of raping foreign aid workers and murdering a local journalist have gone on trial in a South Sudan military court.
The attack in Juba last July during fighting in the civil war cast a spotlight on atrocities by government troops but also led to an inquiry into the failure of United Nations peacekeepers to protect civilians, which led to the sacking of the force’s Kenyan commander. Four of the defendants appeared in court wearing the colours of the “Tiger Division” which guards the president.
