‘Faceless’ deep-sea fish appears after 150 years

-

Scientists in Australia have found a mysterious “faceless fish”, not seen for almost 150 years, during an expedition at depths of 13,000ft near Jervis Bay, south of Sydney.

Researchers believe the 16in fish is the same species that was last caught in the Coral Sea in 1873. “This little fish looks amazing because the mouth is actually at the bottom of the animal so, when you look side-on, you can’t see any eyes, you can’t see any nose or gills or mouth,” said expedition leader Dr Tim O’hara of Museums Victoria.
