Man who rebuilt men
SIR – I was so pleased to read the letter (May 24) from Shirley Phipps about Sir Harold Gillies, suggesting that he should feature in the film being made about Sir Archibald Mcindoe and his pioneering wartime plastic surgery.
When my father’s jaw was blown off at Tobruk in 1940, Sir Harold performed 32 operations on him over two years and remade his jaw using bones from other parts of his body, held together by what we thought was Meccano when shown the photographs as children.
He had many skin grafts and the result was outstanding. He was lucky to be under such a skilled surgeon. Louise Baines
