Time to swing into action and put your pampas out to grass

-

Once you’ve ditched the pampas, here are five of the best grasses to plant in its place.

Festuca glauca Elijah Blue. A low-growing, clump-forming grass that forms tight little cushions of silvery blue leaves up to 30cm long. Great in gravel.

Miscanthus sinensis Kleine Silberspinne, or Chinese silver grass. Forms a compact clump of arching silvery leaves with white stripes. Feathery, reddish flower heads up to 1.2m tall.

Pennisetum villosum, or feathertop. A tufted grass with narrow leaves. Its feathery panicles grow up to 60cm and transform from silvery green to purple as they mature.

Stipa gigantea, or golden oats. Fabulous waft and shimmer, with the oaty flower panicles rising up to 2m.

Stipa tenuissima, or Mexican feather grass. Wonderfully wispy, soft and up to 60cm. A big hit in Jeremy Vine’s BBC Radio 2 Texture Garden at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show.
