Three weeks of rain in an hour to end heatwave

- By Nicola Harley

FLOODS warnings have been issued for the South East after forecasters warned of three weeks of rain in one hour as the heatwave comes to an end.

Torrential showers and thunder are expected to strike the South East today amid fears of flooding.

The Met Office said the worst of the weather was expected between 1pm to 11pm. A spokesman said: “There is the risk of torrential downpours on Friday afternoon and evening. Whilst most places will miss the worst, it could lead to localised surface water flooding and difficult driving conditions.

“Frequent lightning and perhaps hail could be additional hazards.”

Forecasters said the change in weather was the result of humid air from across the Continent.

While temperatures will reach 73F (23C) in London today, they will dip during the expected stormy showers and lower to 69F (20C) by tomorrow and to 66F (19C) by Monday.

Emma Sharples, a Met Office forecaster, said: “Friday may reach 28C (82F) in parts but very warm and humid air from France could see thundery, torrential downpours, with 25-30mm (09in-1.1in) of rain in an hour and surface water. There will be showers on Saturday and Sunday, with the North and West affected most but the South and East also at risk.”
