Snow White and the ‘fat-shaming’ film row

- By Harriet Alexander in New York

THE South Korean producers of a remake of Snow White have withdrawn the film’s marketing campaign after an outcry over the “fat-shaming” of its main character.

The promotional poster for the film, Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs, features a dumpy girl looking longingly at the slender Snow White. “What if Snow White was no longer beautiful and the seven dwarfs not so short?” the tagline asks.

In the trailer, the dwarfs are shown hiding in Snow White’s cottage, secretly watching her undress. They look enthralled as the slender Snow White disrobes – but when she takes off her red shoes, she is suddenly fatter and the dwarfs react in horror.

The film is voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz and Gina Gershon, who is known for her roles in the films Cocktail and Showgirls.

Tess Holliday, a plus-size model known for her social media campaigning, voiced her disapproval – opening the floodgates for an online furore. Ms Moretz, 20, who has dated Brooklyn Beckham, said: “I am just as appalled and angry as everyone else, this wasn’t approved by me or my team.”
