Letterboxes that only take unwanted post

-

sir – I share the frustration of Eldon Sandys (Letters, June 1) with the size, shape and positioning of many letterboxes.

Mine was too small for most parcels, but perfectly adequate for the note saying: “We tried to deliver a package. You can collect it at a post office 10 miles away.”

I have since installed a large posting box to good effect.

sir – While delivering leaflets last year, I found my plastic pamphlet pusher an invaluable aid for the prevention of trapped fingers and broken fingernails.

One just has to fold the leaflet in two and place the plastic into the fold, making the task of insertion into the aperture painless.

sir – If the variations in letterboxes discourage Eldon Sandys from stuffing them with unwanted circulars and junk mail, then we should be grateful for them. Dennis Watling Southend-on-sea, Essex

sir – My receptacle for leaflets has a plastic lid, a wide entrance point and is emptied by the local council. Roy Thomson

sir – Not only do letterboxes need to be standardised, but every house should have its street number clearly displayed on the door, or at the gate.

Although I once enjoyed a party in the wrong house, wondering why I didn’t recognise anyone, the emergency services and delivery firms must waste precious time hunting for the right address, especially at night.
