Get drunk but don’t talk God, decrees Tatler

- By Hannah Furness

THE modern world may pride itself on its liberal virtues, but talk of religion should still be banned at dinner parties, Tatler magazine has ruled.

In a guide to modern manners, the magazine said “snogging” at parties, getting drunk at dinner, and crying at weddings is now perfectly de rigueur.

But admitting to “religious fervour” is very much out.

In an article entitled “What it’s okay to do in public”, published in the July issue, Tatler says snogging in front of others “in these meaner and more frightening times” is now “rather cheering”.

It also notes that “public displays of getting rip-roaringly drunk” are perfectly acceptable, because it enlivens the mood for everyone else.

However, religious fervour is plain bad manners. “It’s fine to do the Alpha course – just don’t bore others about it, even if you think they need saving,” says the magazine. “God should only be discussed in private.”
