Nurse who rushed to help paid with her life

- By Sarah Knapton

WHEN nurse Kirsty Boden saw a van veer off the road and plough into dozens of pedestrians on London Bridge, she did not hesitate in rushing to help the injured.

Seconds later, Khuram Butt, Youssef Zaghba and Rachid Redouane burst from the crashed vehicle and stabbed 28-year-old Miss Boden to death as she tended to the wounded.

In a tribute released yesterday by her family, Miss Boden was described as “selfless, caring, outgoing and kind”. Friends said she died as she had lived, helping other people.

“Kirsty was loved and adored by her family, friends and boyfriend,” said her family in a statement. “She was the most outgoing, kind and generous person who loved to help people.

“Helping people was what she loved to do in her job as a nurse and in her daily life. We are so proud of Kirsty’s brave actions which demonstrate how selfless, caring and heroic she was, not only on that night, but throughout all of her life.”

Ms Boden, from Loxton in South Australia, worked at Guy’s hospital, London, as a staff nurse.

Colleagues in the NHS also paid tribute to the nurse, who was described as “one in a million”.

“I cannot put into words how sad I am that we have lost one of our own,” said Dame Eileen Sills, chief nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust.

he Australian government confirmed last night that two of its nationals were among those killed.

The family of Sara Zelenak, 21, who was working at a nanny, said they were “bracing for the worst”.
