Qatar’s tainted gas

-

SIR – Qatar is in the news again, accused of supporting terrorism (report, June 6).

As the owner of a gas business based near Preston, I know that Lancashire is a cold place in winter, and that we rely on natural gas for our central heating. We have two choices to keep ourselves alive through winter. We can produce our own local gas, tax it and use the funds to help local communities insulate homes; or we can buy gas from Qatar.

There is no tax to UK plc from Qatari liquefied natural gas. The latter also has a much higher carbon footprint than our local gas, which is produced next to the gas grid. John Baldwin
