Assignment: Recycling Beirut WORLD SERVICE, 1.30PM
Nidale Abou Mrad meets the women in Beirut responsible for convincing their fellow citizens to recycle their waste and overturn a sticky situation in the capital of Lebanon. Since the government closed the country’s only working landfill site, rubbish was piled high in the streets. When politicians proved unable to solve the problem, a grass roots campaign called “You Stink” was formed, and this is the story of how Beirut came to terms with its waste and communities taking new pride in their surroundings. Ballad and Folksong: Romeo and Juliet
RADIO 4 EXTRA, 8.00PM
This is a rare chance to hear Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet re-imagined in the language and context of the mid-sixties, with songs and music by Ewan Maccoll and Peggy Seeger. It was produced for the BBC Home Service in 1966 but it has not been broadcast since. The project aims to reinterpret Shakespeare’s play as a series of folk songs, presented like the documentary recordings of traditional folk ballads produced for radio by song collectors.
