Fugitive fled UK wearing electronic tag
A judge has criticised UK border controls after a tycoon suspected of masterminding Britain’s biggest ever banking fraud was able to flee to Pakistan despite having no passport and while wearing an electronic tag.
Shaid Luqman, 48, flew out of Manchester airport in 2011, carrying millions of pounds in allegedly stolen cash, after he left a trail of debt following the collapse of his £300million property empire. Despite a warrant being issued for his arrest, he remains on the run.
At Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, Judge Angela Nield said: “I must say I am quite surprised that he was able to leave the country. My other half doesn’t seem to be able to go anywhere without being searched.”
