Thai man gets 35 years for Facebook posts

- By Nicola Smith

A THAI man has been sentenced to 35 years in jail after being found guilty of defaming the country’s monarchy on Facebook.

The jail term was handed down to the man, 33, after he was accused of posting 10 photos, videos and comments on the social networking site that were critical of the royal family.

Lawyers say the man, named only as Wichai by his family, is hoping to have his sentence reduced by royal amnesty on the king’s July 28 birthday.

Regulators have also revealed that they plan to impose financial penalties on Facebook and other video-sharing sites if they fail to swiftly remove what they deem to be illegal content.
