Almost exactly a year ago, the United Kingdom stood on the brink of a historic choice. The question on the ballot paper was simple – should Britain remain a member of the European Union or should we leave?

I believe the real question was about much more than that. The British people were being asked whether they wanted to forge a bright new future, in full control of their own destiny.

We know the answer. The decision was made for the UK to be a country in control of its money, its borders and its own laws. To become a great, global trading nation again; free to strike trade deals with new friends around the world and build on old alliances.

But we also know that the decision divided the country, and that everybody voted in line with what they believed was right for our United Kingdom.

So, as we approach the time to deliver on that decision, it is vital that we achieve a deal that can command the widest possible support.

Theresa May is the ideal person to deliver that.

She has set out a clear vision to make sure that we get a Brexit deal that works for the whole country and guarantees our long-term prosperity.

And she has set out her determination to make sure we use Brexit to build a country where no person or community is left behind and everyone has the chance to make the most of their talents.

That work begins now, and I was delighted to be invited to play my part by returning to government to serve in Mrs May’s Cabinet.

The General Election result showed a clear consensus for leaving the single market and ending free movement.

As we approach the Brexit negotiations to deliver that, the Prime Minister will be focused on getting the maximum possible access to the single market so that our great trading links with our near neighbours continue.

We are also determined to make sure our valued cooperation in areas such as science goes on – and that we continue to attract the talent we need.

It is part of getting the best possible

Brexit deal that it can also bring the country back together again.

Yesterday, we held our first political Cabinet meeting since the general election, and the message was unanimous: let’s get on with Brexit, and get on with building a country that works for everyone.

The nation needs a government that will govern in the national interest, and the Prime Minister is already getting on with that job.

Today, she travels to meet the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, and she will announce a new joint campaign to tackle online radicalisation – the latest stage of our strong counter-terrorism cooperation.

Over many years of working with Theresa I have seen, again and again, that she is driven by two great leadership qualities. She always puts what is right for the country above any other consideration. And she has the determination to see vital jobs through to the end – whatever the opposition. From deporting hate preachers who sow division in our society to reforming the criminal justice system so it treats all citizens fairly, Theresa has consistently shown a deep commitment to serving others and the moral courage to make a decisive difference.

Those are the two qualities we need at this critical time for our country, and I am proud to be serving alongside her. Michael Gove is the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
