Tony Martin offers aid over shooting

-

FARMER Tony Martin has offered to help the elderly siblings being questioned by police following the fatal shooting of a suspected burglar after a break in at their isolated caravan home.

Brother and sister Reuben and Cathy Gregory were yesterday still being held on suspicion of murder after the incident in the early hours of Monday in which Wayne Digby, 48, was killed.

The incident has led to comparisons with Mr Martin’s 1999 case when the Norfolk farmer was convicted of murder after shooting dead a burglar at his home. The conviction was later reduced to manslaughter and he served three years in prison.

Mr Martin has since championed the right of home owners to defend their homes and properties from criminals.

Last night Mr Martin, 72, offered to meet the Gregorys to give them the benefit of his experience in getting proper legal advice. He described all burglars as “vermin” – a term he claimed police were unhappy with him using.

He added: “This poor couple will be totally confused, and are likely to face charges. Its important that they are properly advised by experts.”
