SIR – On May 23, London Midland updated its online guide to getting a seat on trains from London Euston in the evening peak time.

I noticed that only 30 per cent of the trains were 12 carriages long. The rest had eight carriages. In addition, 75 per cent of trains were standing room only. The line has the capacity, but day after day commuters have to stand because London Midland cannot afford any more carriages.

Somehow, though, the Government can find £80 billion for HS2. Mike Haville
