Oxford student’s social ban for Ku Klux Klan fancy dress
An Oxford University student has been banned from college social events after he turned up at a fancy-dress party in a Ku Klux Klan outfit.
The student, who has not been named, donned a pillowcase with eye slits to attend Christ Church College’s “bop” last year.
He claimed his KKK costume was intended as a “satirical response” to the “2016 theme” of the event, which took place at the end of the autumn term.
The undergraduate has now been banned from future junior common room events.
The college sent an email to students on Wednesday saying it had been “a deeply regrettable incident in which an offensive item of clothing was worn at a college bop”.
The message, from the college’s junior censor, Brian Young, said: “We wish to affirm in the strongest possible terms that Christ Church is firmly committed to equality, diversity, and respect.”
