HS2 to the rescue
SIR – London Midland still runs some eight-carriage trains from Euston – not for want of rolling stock (Letters, June 17), but because some platforms at Euston and en route to Birmingham and Crewe cannot take 12-car trains.
Extending these platforms would be not just expensive but impossible within the present station boundaries. The line from Euston has no capacity to run extra peak trains.
HS2 is the solution to overcrowding. It will remove fast through trains from the existing line, to be replaced by trains that do stop at commuter stations. As part of the rebuilding of Euston, lengthening the eight-car platforms will become practicable.
