The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)

FILM4, 4.20PM ★★★★

 This is Alfred Hitchcock’s remake of his own 1934 film. Dr Ben Mckenna (James Stewart) and his wife Jo (Doris Day, three years after Calamity Jane) are forced to keep silent about a planned political murder. The jury’s out on which film is better, but perhaps the earlier black-and-white version is a shade more sinister than this excellent, glitzier take, which won an Oscar for the song Qué Será, Será. Brenda de Banzie also stars.

The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)

FILM4, 6.40PM ★★★

 Despite being the tale of Anne and Mary Boleyn and their relationships with Henry VIII, this film makes no claims of historical accuracy – but then neither does its source material, Philippa Gregory’s novel of the same name. But there is sumptuous costume design and fun, if melodramatic, performances from its stars Eric Bana (Henry), Natalie Portman (Anne) and Scarlett Johansson (Mary). Eddie Redmayne also stars.

Anger Management (2003)

COMEDY CENTRAL, 9.00PM ★★★

 It’s Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler team up for this comedy, in which a mild-mannered bloke is forced to co-habit with his eccentric therapist. Nicholson is cruising, Sandler is not at his best and the plot is absurd and illogical, but it’s worth checking out the supporting cast, which includes Woody Harrelson as a transvestite hooker, John C Reilly as a Buddhist monk and John Turturro as a very angry man.
