How home improvements caused a fire hazard

-

SIR – Following the death of my mother we are refurbishing the bungalow in which she lived.

As part of this process we removed the loft insulation, installed via a government grant. This appears to be mainly glass fibre, and was assumed to be non-flammable.

However, in light of recent events, we conducted a test. We found that it burnt vigorously, while dropping liquid lumps of flaming material. W J Foden

SIR – It’s understandable that people want a full investigation into the Grenfell Tower fire, but I am astonished by the calls for what amount to summary verdicts.

Several people interviewed on television have demanded the arrest of everyone potentially concerned, and their immediate imprisonment, while the investigation gets under way. This is, frankly, lynch law.

Intemperate views, many of them formed or fuelled as a result of comments by politicians seeking to grandstand, or journalists wanting a good story, don’t make for justice. Bob Timmis

SIR – All residential buildings above the height to which a fire brigade rescue ladder can reach should be legally required to employ a night watchman (or two) every night.

There should also be an external fire alarm, similar to the air-raid sirens of the Second World War. Donald Morton
