Tories’ best bet

SIR – In the days after the election I had hoped to get good betting odds on David Davis being the next prime minister, but was out of the country.

Now that Boris Johnson’s team is briefing against Mr Davis (report, June 20), it is too late. The more he is briefed against, the more seriously he must be taken as a safe pair of hands. Bernard Kerrison
