Trump hails by-election win as own triumph

Donald Trump declared a “huge win” after a Republican victory in a Georgia by-election that had morphed into a referendum on his presidency.

Republicans and Democrats poured $50million (£39.5million) into the race, the most expensive US House by-election in history. Mr Trump said Karen Handel had done a “fantastic job”. He added in a text to supporters: “Democrats lose again. Total disarray. The Make America Great Again mandate is stronger than ever.”
